The Kiss of the Unicorn is an ongoing series of images I am developing to explore the narrative of the Queer identity of the Unicorn in contemporary culture. I am fascinated by the evolution of the Unicorn and its meaning in human culture. In medieval life, the Unicorn represents Masculinity and immortality. Virgin maidens only attract Unicorns.

In Peter S. Beagle’s classic novel The Last Unicorn, she learns what it is to be human, learns about the human condition, and tastes mortality and the gift of love.

In Queer culture, the Unicorn represents something beautiful, powerful, and feared. The unicorn can be a symbol for queer people. Members of the LGBTQ+ community are magical in their resistance, resilience, and ability to love despite the abuse we face in society for being our authentic selves.

The series I am working on is the narrative of my marriage to my authentic self.

The unicorn is the queer, magical, and beautiful self, and I, the repressed virgin, become its Bride. We are engaged, married, and flee to live a life of freedom and beauty.
